Kate Lipper-Garabedian, an education attorney and experienced public servant, was elected on November 7, 2017, to one of the four Alderman-At-Large seats on the Melrose Board of Aldermen. Kate serves as the Chief Legal Counsel to the Massachusetts Secretary of education and has a distinguished record of public service that includes her work at the State House and as a public middle school teacher.  Following law school, she served for one year as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Norman H. Stahl on the First Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals. And for more than five years, she worked as a senior policy and legal advisor at a national consulting firm supporting states, school districts, colleges and universities, and nonprofit organizations to drive significant improvements in the U.S. education system.

Kate is the wife of Mark, mother of Harrison and Oscar, and dog treat provider to Baryn, the family cockapoo.  She has been a member of the Melrose Birth to Five Committee, supporting efforts that connect families with young children to other parents and community resources, and the Melrose Complete Streets Working Group, which identifies road projects focused on enhancing accessibility and safety for all transportation modalities for state funding. Her family holds a membership with the Melrose YMCA and the Melrose Family Room. And Kate is working on her handicap each summer as a member of the Hoodwinks Ladies Golf League at Mount Hood.

Kate loves many things about Melrose including…

  • Frequenting the City’s parks and playgrounds, particularly the Common and the Washington Playground
  • Attending the Melrose Symphony Orchestra concerts, the Chamber of Commerce’s Main Street events, and the Sally Frank’s Farmers’ Market
  • Signing up for activities at the YMCA and through the Recreation Department
  • Shopping downtown for Christmas and birthday presents
  • Taking in 9 holes at Mount Hood, including with the Hoodwinks Ladies Golf League
  • Hiking to Pine Banks’s Mount Ephraim lookout for views of Boston and the Atlantic Ocean
